Americans who want to get a more balanced view than tiresome accusations of "racism" should read Rod Dreher, who now lives in Hungary.

Especially given that we share a fair number of Substack 'reads,' Mark, including The UnPopulist, it'd be interesting to learn more about your views.

Do you have a list of a few key points, however succinct, where you agree (and maybe also disagree at times) with Dreher's viewpoints on Orbán?

After a lifetime (I'm 67) as a liberal Democrat in the US, today my main political goal is fighting the crime against humanity of child mutilation and sterilization, as practiced by gender ideologues and fully backed by western "liberal" regimes (no longer deserving of the name, as they now ruthlessly suppress dissent), and the concommitant attack on women's sex-based rights. Today I vote straight Republican and send all my political and chartible donations to the Women's Liberation Front, which (among other good things) fights to keep male rapists out of women's prisons (which, before the western world forgot what a woman is, would have been a violation of Geneva accords and is, yes, another crime against humanity). Orban fights this fight. If Orban could run for POTUS in the US, I would vote for him.

Aha, thanks. Appreciate your thoughts.

Your own views may be even more emphatic than these, yet wanted to share what feels – to me, at any rate – like thoughtful ground somewhere near the edge of the vast middle on that issue, about two other European countries that have decided that such practices should be carried out "only in exceptional cases."

I am a long time reader of Lisa Selin Davis. She is right that Finland and Sweden have moved in the right direction, but not yet far enough: the problem is that there are no standards for deciding which cases are "exceptional".

Davis believes that the culture war can be settled by good science, but I see no evidence that this is the case. Stopping the crime against humanity of child mutilation in places like the US, Canada, Spain, and Scotland (all of which have some form of gender "self ID" laws, just recently enacted in the last two) cannot be done by marshalling facts, only by marshalling political power. Orban is the prime example of this, and the greatest success. His US mini-me, DeSantis, has my total support and I will be working hard to make him the next POTUS.

An excellent overview of how Orban built and retains power.
