I’m increasingly thinking that one of the major challenges with today’s liberal democracies is that nobody who is qualified to be the chief executive is willing to do it.

Wow! This was great to read and gives me a hint about what I have been wondering for a while.

I really do believe that there will be a power struggle when Trump goes. A war of the think tanks and the monied oligarchs for dominance over the coalition and the movement. I have believed that the Christian Nationalist core would have the most power and so the ascendancy of Vance makes perfect sense. But can they keep the rest of the coalition together.

Assuming our electoral infrastructure is intact and operational (as happened in Hungary) he will face the same headwinds that every other Vice President running to succeed the President they served has encountered. One can only distance oneself so far from your President's failures without looking like a hypocrite or disloyal. And we know disloyalty is especially not tolerated by Trump these days. Outright hypocrisy isn't marketable. Only four Presidents have been elected immediately after serving as Vice Presidents. Adams and Jefferson were elected under a different electoral system than we have today. Only Buchanan and George H. W. Bush went from VP to President and then they only served one term. Nixon and Biden ran and were elected after a hiatus from holding office.

JD Vance's best opportunity for winning the next election would be if Donald Trump dies in office.

The problem with America isn’t just that we have so many stupid politicians but also that we have a lot of intelligent politicians who insist on performative stupidity. Not sure which is worse: a genuinely stupid politician or a smart one pretending to be stupid.
