"At Davos in January, well before any of this, Carney did something a serving leader rarely does: he acknowledged out loud that the rules-based international order had always been, in part, a fiction.... He borrowed Václav Havel’s image of the greengrocer who hangs the official slogan in his shop window without believing a word of it, and argued that the time had come to stop performing the fiction."

So Carney is content for the "rules-based international order" to collapse, primarily, it would seem, because it made a place for US hegemony. But is any "rules-based order" going to survive without a hegemon who can enforce the rules, even if it bends them from time to time? The overturning of Iraq's invasion of Kuwait was the one time the UN security apparatus functioned as planned to deal effectively with a major geo-political breach of the rules. Carney should wonder whether this could have happened without US leadership before he becomes too enthusiastic about the fall of the current order.

I didn't see Carney as being enthusiastic about the end of the rules-based order. I think he was happy that the world stopped pretending that Trump was a defender of it in order to buy itself some protection from him and some ongoing security when neither was the case. That is how I read the reference to Havel's greengrocer.

I don't think Trump ever pretended to be, or was ever seen as, a defender of the rules-based interantional order as it has been understood. Rather, he was a vocal opponent of it; he assessed it as a con perpetrated on the American people resulting in the US paying too much for defense and getting the short end of trade deals.

Carney was complaining about the rules-based order as it "had always been," i.e., distorted in our favor due to our hegemony. But, without a hegemon, who bells the cat?

He may not have been, but in the first 10 months of his presidency, as he constantly attacked them and America's alliances, Europeans were pretending that simply hanging a sign that America is great and he is great would do the trick.

He’s an idiot. But “backward”? Seriously? I guess everybody does click-bait. But serious topics merit thoughtful headlines and ledes. And please stop trying to sell us the UN, the EU, Australia, and Carney, all of which have revealed themselves as enemies of actual liberalism. Trump is as well, but so are they in different guise. The difference is that he doesn’t pretend to believe in liberalism.

Sadly as an American with many Canadian friends, I have to agree. Our two countries are joined together in a mutually beneficial arrangement that has served both well since WWII. The free flow of trade and of talent between us has made both countries better.

Most Americans are appalled at what the current administration has done not only to Canada but to the rest of our allies. The mob boss mentality is not compatible with democracy and the rule of law. My only hope is that enough good will remains that after this insanity has passed that we can heal the very real wounds.

Both countries need steel. What is the point?

As @abram alludes, Trump and Wile E. Carney are on the same side as opponents of the rules based order. But we see more than 10 years into Trump and 65+ years after Ike characterized the US as “Uncle Sucker”, Europe and Canada are still intent on free riding. This, 4 years in to Russia’s overt invasion of Ukraine.

Carney, is more French than the French. He has a brain the size of a planet and full on disdain for America, especially under the 6-3 gauche Trump.

Elbows up was a great trope to win an election, but regardless of Trump’s insults, continuing it after Election Day is terrible for Canada. He wants this Rupture. There is no better evidence than his seeking to join the EU. He will surrender Canadian sovereignty to become 27th EU state. Better than 51st American state? Hard to reckon- the UK withdrew for a reason.

The entire US / Canada trade war is a farce.

Mark Carney has been publicly caught lying, not by Canadians, but by his peers at least 3 times in the last month.

Lie #1) Carney stated that Canada would be splitting the profits from the Bridge deal in Sarnia / Port Huron, but was exposed by America who corrected Carney on the matter, stating that only once the bridge costs were paid back to the US would America share in profits.

Lie #2) Carney stated that the US terms were unacceptable, justifying his last minute decision to remove Canada from the bargaining table, and he let out excuses like "French packaging". Nothing was further from the truth.

The truth was exposed yet again by America. The US has problems with Canada's ties and trade with China, as these present sovereignty and security problems to BOTH countries. This is a totally acceptable concern on the part of the US, but this brings us to our 3rd lie from Carney.

Lie #3) Carney campaigned on the statement that China's military was NOT to be trusted. Now Carney is cozying up to China's military, and Canadians have just found out through FOIA that Trudeau actually held secret TRAINING EXERCISES with China's military, and tried to hide this from the public.

Final words on Carney:

Carney's book 'Values' clearly explains where his values lay. His values lay in the Marxists, socialist ideology that has ravaged world economies and brought them under destructive forces that have pushed most of the West deeper into poverty than they have ever been since WW2.

Carney's company Brookfield has a market cap of $100BIL, the size of a small country, but you can bet that his investments are all bet on the New World Order he is trying to implement, and if he had made a deal with the US, a country who opposes everything the WEF and Carney stand for, it would have harmed Brookfield's investments.

THIS is the most likely reason Carney was never going to sign a deal with the US...but it gets worse:

Carney has been a pro-China advocate for at least 15 years (he was publicly quoted as stating so in 2012), is a WEF plant who was groomed for the position of PM in Canada well before anybody knew Trudeau was going to be ousted, and has employed Democrat and WEF employees to use Canada as a bulwark, to crush the American economy and bring the US into submission for the coming "New World Order".

So, in short, Carney's agenda has nothing to do with Canada, he is compromised in some way ethically with Brookfield and with China, and his ultimate goal is aligning Canada with Davos.

Something MOST Canadians don't want (less than half the country voted for him, and he managed to secure a Majority by getting almost a half dozen parliamentary members to cross the political aisle and drag their constituents to a party they did NOT vote for.

Canada is pretty much a fallen state, socialist by almost every metric and basically a communist state now by an objective standard.

I'm not so sure I would trust Bob Rae's interpretation of events and outcomes, especially as a former leader of a failed, socialist political party in Canada.
