I worked in the NL for two years right after the Theo Van Gogh assassination. I am aware of its challenges integrating non-western immigrants. And the European welfare system made it possible for immigrants to live in a bubble and formed its own kind of extremism. But Wilders never offered real solutions. The parliamentary system likely will require him to make some concessions, but it is a dangerous time given his anti-EU views.
As another noted (I also lived in NL in the past) there was more than one assassination in the NL. From that point forward there have been escalating assaults on gays in Holland by Islamic men.
Likewise, Wilders (I can’t get beyond the bleached blond hair) is gay and the targeting of gays must be part of his equation.
What’s strange perhaps is that the reporting on this is skewed, 67 attacks in Amsterdam in 2007 are mentioned, but it’s about “young men”.
I’ve never seen a young Dutch man go into homophobic rants, much less violence. It’s almost invariably Moroccan or Turkish boys who grew up in Holland.
Due mention of complex factors for Wilders would add more depth. Hair aside, Wilders resemblance to Trump socially, financially, and criminally couldn’t be more polar opposite.
This post perfectly encapsulates the abject failure of The Unpopulist to recognize what is happening and where lie the true dangers to the Western Liberal order. Islamism and leftism are rapidly destroying the cultural fabric. Trump and Wilders are both responses to these real dangers. Calling them and their supporters “far-right” and “populist” are both cheap and weak attempts to delegitimize them. Ten years from now those intended epithets will be embraced as badges of honor as the EU fades into irrelevance and Net Zero is no more than a joke. Liberal republics depend on toleration; woke progressivism and Islamism are the intolerant ideologies that must be marginalized if we are to escape our current Road to Serfdom.
If "liberal republics depend on toleration," as you claim, then your problem should be with the person profiled in this article who has called for an entire religion to be banned from public life.
This global fever of grievance, fear, resentment, and scapegoating of the "other" appears to be accelerating, with few speed bumps.
The worlds of art, music, history, literature, philosophy are at our fingertips, and we've largely chosen propaganda and cruelty instead.

No one is rumoring he's gay....not that it matters, but it's just not true.

This response is a complete mess.
Why are you asserting, without evidence, that Wilders is gay? And how is that relevant to anything?
Also, the author had an entire section about the similarities between Trump and Wilders. The hair thing had nothing to do with it.

Without evidence? Wilders was rumored to be gay for some time. There’s nothing wrong with being gay. He is in a heterosexual marriage I believe AtM.
