Thank you! This is the first time I have read ANYONE get to the real point of Trump's tariff agenda which is his personal power and exercising transactional dominance over countries and American corporations to do things entirely unrelated to matters of trade policy.
There is one more reason that I believe Trump favors a tariff system. It shifts the burden of funding the government from businesses to consumers without calling it a tax. Or at least that’s what he would like us to believe. I’m still waiting for Mexico to pay for the wall.
This was true in 2007-2017, during the life of the Jeep Patriot. But the quote was during 2019. If you are gonna argue against tariffs, please be current.
1. Phrases like "economic superstition and historical ignorance" and calling Trump "Tariff Man" suggest an agenda. I recommend asking why.
2. Studies (like those from the Peterson Institute) argue against tariffs but omit similar papers showing the opposite effect, not to mention peaceful geopolitical results from tariff threats (as opposed to war).
3. Heavy on predictions about future economic impacts (like increased consumer prices or job losses) based on historical data or theoretical models. Economic outcomes are notoriously hard to predict with certainty. It's unlikely Steve is the master of statistical predictive models.
4. Omission of Counterarguments: while rife w/ criticisms of Trump's tariff policies, it doesn't even touch the issue from a quantitative perspective.
My take? Liberal arts major isn't an economist, but did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
OK, Doug. What is your counter argument? And to which claim? How about a link to the "similar papers showing the opposite effect?" Point #3 makes sense, but evidence-based claims must rely on historical data or theoretical models. So, it is what it is, FWIW. The comment about "peaceful geopolitical results (?!) -- name them.
As typical of a dirty, braindead MAGA shitsmear who doesn’t understand econ 101, he provides no sources for his claims about studies which supposedly exonerate his supreme leader’s tariff fetish.

@Steve Chapman"“When you buy a Jeep Patriot manufactured in Illinois, at least 17% of the cost goes to parts made in other countries,” notes (https://www.frbsf.org/research-and-insights/publications/economic-letter/2019/01/how-much-do-we-spend-on-imports/) the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. One other thing: The US does not have a liberal democracy; it is a republic.

Trump called himself Tariff Man.
