I have been hungry for this article for a long time. During the revolution I had many Iranian friends in university but over the years my contact with the community has waned and so my impressions of Iran are generally informed through the media filter often by voices with an agenda of one sort of another.
It was so helpful to hear from someone who sees things from the perspective of ordinary Iranians and not elite spokespersons. Like many Americans I have made assumptions about Iran about which I really know nothing! This helped me understand. Thank you.
Many countries suppress and demoralize their citizens. Some fail to recognize human rights. Others create suffering for many so a few can benefit. In my lifetime, it's fascinating to see where and why the U.S. decides to intervene, while ignoring sometimes worse situations. But the one constant- it never works. U.S. attempts at intervention are unsustainable, and ultimately, the U.S. taxpayer is left footing the bill.
Wow! What a terrific analysis of a torn society and simultaneously, a prophesy of America's future under its current President. Evangelical Christians seem to view Trump as "The Deputy of God on Earth. The Supreme Leader". In the MAGAverse, He occupies the throne of "The Institution of the Absolute Guardian". Trump's World Liberty Financial and cryptocurrency projects correspond nicely with Iran's Supreme Leader's "Bonyads", which are "Large for-profit trusts that operate beyond the jurisdiction of the government and directly under the supreme leader and guard the economic interest and state monopolies of the Islamic Republic." In America's case its Bonyads will operate under the control of and guard the interests and state monopolies of the Trump empire. We might be able to learn some distressing lessons from the Iranian populace. However, I agree that both Iran's citizens and those in the United States will ultimately face the need to change their respective leadership and the governments.
As much as the Shat did to make Iran more secularized, he could also be pretty ruthless. From what I have read his government also tortured people. Our government is greatly responsible for how things in Iran have turned out. The CIA ousted a democratically elected president and brought back the shah.
Real written.

Keep it real and strong. Every authoritarian and collectivist system has a best before date.
I wonder if the American people have the desire or capacity to liberate ourselves from our Supreme Leader?
More on topic: both a tragic and a hopeful take on your situation.
Excellent read, and important that everyone read it! And pass it on! This reads like the USA of the near future.
As much of a menace as the Orange Shitstain is to the world? Or the blue-rinse bastard. No.

Beautifully written.
