I appreciate the editor’s note. Not only does his speech not stand on its own without it, but Newsom also needs his caveats before presentation. With it, we’re able to appreciate the speech’s significance and context, without undue focus on extraneous details.

He's an imperfect messenger but his message is spot on, timely and courageous. Hopefully it inspires everyone to resist in a peaceful manner.

Rule of thumb: If you see flames and get hit in the head with a rock, it isn't a protest, it's a riot.

Dealing with rioters should be the mayor's or governor's job. Trump, by sending in marines, is coloring way outside the lines - again. Newsom's demonstrated lack of integrity lessens the impact of anything he says.

We need immigrants and will need them more in the future. Congress needs to finally make some reasonable law in this area. Biden deserves blame for being so lax on the border, Trump deserves blame for the cruel and stupid way he is handling it. However, congress should have solved this decades ago.

The reason we are in this situation-- and having Trump as a president-- is because of people like Newsom. He did everything he could to pander to the extreme left which made most moderates (and sensible people) throw up their hands in despair. California has been a sanctuary for all undocumented people and yet this has left more and more people homeless and vulnerable. I see small children selling flowers on the side of the freeway. We don't have enough resources or social services to handle the homeless, addicts, mentally ill who are citizens, and yet we accept more people from other countries? The level of education in the public schools is horrendously low but sure we DO have a mandate to teach LBGTQIA2S in K- 12 classrooms thanks to Newsom. Elementary kids won't know how to read but they will understand what it means to be a transexual. And gangs. I teach in Juvenile Hall and I can tell you that the gang violence is real and growing. And so Newsom ruins the state (along with LA Mayor Bass) and then comes out as an indignant leader to attack Trump. I do not like Trump at all but I don't trust Newsom who is just angling for the presidency and is just as morally corrupt, though with better hair.

The best way for Democrats to improve their declining poll numbers would be to get Blue Cities and Blue States under control and prove that their policies lead to peace and prosperity.

Newsom is as corrupt as they come, so he's not the one to be calling out Trump.

Where did the $10s of billions go that was supposed to eradicate homelessness?

Remember when he told everyone to lock down for their safety and then got caught hosting a private party with no social distancing?

Remember when he wanted to defund the police, which increases the lawlessness of California.

The state of California is no longer the Golden State, and Newsom is to blame. Nobody else.

The citizens of Cali have already tried removing him from office due to his corrupt. The dude is nothing more than a career politician and needs to be ignored.

So...

Is that a reason to send in the Marines?

If it is, where does sending in the marines stop?

Considering California is a lawless state, where crimes are absolved and criminals often better protected than the victims, maybe an example needs to be made to restore faith in law enforcement.

Or did everyone just forget that one of the wealthiest cities (San Francisco) along with the entire Golden State has utterly gone down the toilet, is rampant with homelessness and lawlessness and citizens are begging for change?

For you, words have no meaning A lawless state is one where the state does not obey the law. That fits Trump.

But where does "send in the marines" stop?

Unfortunately, I must disagree with you. I just had lunch sitting on the waterfront across from San Francisco. It was quite pleasant.

There were no homeless people, no one robbed me, and I got to eat my sandwich in peace while all the tourists wandered past.

I did check the homicide rate by state. California ranks 26th. Arkansas ranks 46th.

Do you think that Arkansas should be occupied by the US army?

Lastly, Trump pardoned or commuted the sentences for the J6ers, who stormed the Capitol. Can you tell me what kind of example should be made of them?

"his agents are arresting dishwashers, gardeners, day laborers, and seamstresses"

Lets look at some of the "dishwashers, gardeners, day laborers, and seamstresses" arrested, shall we?

Cuong Chanh Phan was convicted of second-degree murder for his role in a deadly 1994 shooting at a high school graduation party in Southern California. After being thrown out of the party, Phan returned with gang members and opened fire with semi-automatic rifles on a crowd of 30 people. - why he wasn't deported 30 years ago is anyone's guess.

Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez, 55, a Philippine national, who was sentenced to 37 years in prison for assault with intent to commit rape and sexual penetration with a foreign object in Pomona, California.

Jose Ortiz, an Ecuadorean national with convictions for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 5 kilos of cocaine on a vessel in Florida.

Either we have the authority to enforce the laws within our borders, law which I might add the vast majority of Americans support, or we don't.

Agreed-and then California had the audacity to ask for federal monies to bail them out from failed policies. I say Gavin if you’re for this as governor it is up to you to find financial means within your own state and not take a dollar from any other state.

Idiotic non-sequitur. The putative fact that you can find some criminals among the arrested and deported does nothing to dispel anything Newsom has said. Newsom actually concedes—though this is not a consensus position among liberals—that going after criminals would be unobjectionable. The point is that Trump’s crackdown is also targeting the innocent. Do us a favor and try to grapple with the argument a little better than this.

Do you hold the front door of your home and business to all strangers?

No?

Why not?

And if you don't why would an entire country be expected to? If someone is in the US illegally, there's no way to sugarcoat it. It's ILLEGAL.

Mike-- That's true. In fact, many of my Latino students' parents did not go to any of the protests because they have said crime has risen in their communities because of young undocumented people who are stealing from the stores.
