I disagree that the so called extremists of both parties are equivalent. The GOP extremists are nihilists who seek to destroy the governing structure of the US. Like most nihilists they have no real alternative.

Nobody in the Democratic Party has similar objectives. Most of the policies supported by the Squad are perfectly normal proposals which in most western countries would be mainstream.

I agree completely that the two sides are not equivalent and the piece is not saying that they are. It is merely saying that the more radical members on each side are pulling the moderates, leading to a collapse of center -- which needs to be reconstituted through a new alignment.

I agree with your response, but the description of Sinema as the penultimate moderate was hard to read. She refused, repeatedly, to provide input on legislation, then held it hostage to give perks to private equity and pharmaceutical companies (among others). She refused to attend caucus meetings, refused to talk to reporters, refused to meet with her constituents.

With that aside, the path forward is a coalition of the center, but I see no serious sign that the GOP House will take any serious steps, other than to the right. They seem poised to make exactly the same choices they made under Trump.

What is middle moderate nowadays? Because it sounds to me that middle moderate is basically just left. I mean, wokeism is basically what many consider to be "middle moderate" nowadays.

Can I bring your attention to the fact that the US is the only Westernized democratic country in the WORLD that does not require ID across the country for it's Federal elections? And it's primarily democratic states that do not require it. Even up here in Canada it's a must. Why is that? Before democrats can criticize Republicans for "destroying democracy" this is a fundamental issue that must be addressed...and one that most "mainstream western countries" would agree with.

What if the problem isn’t the people on the other side of the aisle? What if the two-party system itself is creating a vicious cycle, making government less effective and driving us apart? The current ruling two-party duopoly is so ingrained in our system that we take it as a given but there is nothing in our Constitution concerning political parties. We have allowed the two ruling parties to institutionalize themselves in our political and governing systems not withstanding that legally political parties are not government but private associations. They therefore are not required to be open minded but can discriminate based on their own preferences. Along with being able to run the parties independently Congressional membership has the privilege of self-determining salaries, pensions, travel, and other TAXPAYER FUNDED perks while exempting themselves from certain federal laws, i.e. the Freedom of Information Act, safety and health investigatory subpoenas, protections against retaliation for whistleblowers, etc. Taxpayers are also asked to pay for these private clubs primary elections and campaign finance laws are rigged in their favor, just to name a few of the advantages they are afforded.

We have come to the point where one side of the aisle wants you to believe that they can declassify secret documents simply by thinking it and the other side of the aisle wants you to believe that you can change genders simply by thinking it. I believe America can survive the demagogues it’s the gullible audience that will kill democracy because democracy has no solution for how to fix itself when a large enough portion of the populace goes sour.

Everywhere in American life we demand numerous choices except in politics where we blindly give power to private entities to decide laws and determine who will run to be our representative, governor or president. WHY?
