Federalizing the nat'l guard in CA and sending 4,000 & 700 Marines to LA. He's putting the country on a path to martial law, even more greatly expanded executive power, and canceled elections as a real possibility. Stay tuned.
Invoking Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows him to block any foreigner if he deems that their entry would be “detrimental to the interests of the United States.” So what President Trump is doing, like other presidents: Regan, Bush 1 & 2, Clinton, Obama, Biden, is legal but you don’t like President Trump and therefore how the law is applied.
“Before Trump, both Democratic and Republican presidents used the 212(f) authority sparingly.” Obama used it at least 19 times.
“typically employed in order to enforce United Nations sanctions or target individuals or groups associated with terrorism,” Again, in context of the times and threats to Americans.
“When Justice Roberts writes about “exuding deference to the president,” I have to wonder whether that’s the law, or just him.” So, you question the intent of the court because why? The President is Trump.
“In response to relatively small protests in Los Angeles” In the summer of love, I heard this phrase a bit differently but with the same sentiment “a mostly peaceful protest”. Like a controlled burn, the only control is the initial spark.
“It’s important we respect the executive authority of our country’s governors to manage their National Guards.” Yes, when that governor has shown the ability to use that executive authority to protect citizens of his state. The opposite of which this governor has shown the ability to do.
“Orders for these purposes shall be issued through the governors of the States.” Not when it is the governors who aren’t enforcing the law: Governor Orval Faubus, Governor Ross Barnett, Governor George Wallace, all invoked 10 U.S. Code § 12406 to enforce federal law when it is obstructed. You can’t pick and choose which law based upon personal animus or bias.
“particularly with the recent arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka who accompanied members of Congress” Not actually what happened from the video. The fact is not three Members of Congress innocently exercising their rights to inspect the facility. You missed the mob with them. If they wanted to inspect the facility, they could, as Alina Habba offered, asked for a time to inspect the facility but they showed up not to inspect but to incite and get some air time.
“Congress their right to inspect those facilities.” But to do so lawfully and not as it was done here as political performance.
I do wish someone besides Trump would occasionally be named as the 'doer' of everything. You think if Trump went away these actions and policies would vanish? Call out Steve Miller and the Heritage Foundation Fledglings, and others.
Power Consolidation. His abuses and usurpations can be fought and punished, if he cannot consolidate power in order to evade or suppress resistance and punishment.
I think the greatest threat is the war on universities. This is destroying fundamentally important research.
