The thing I don't get about the "We won't have a nation without borders" argument is that no one argues that the USA is not divided into states. The Federal government requires state governments to have open borders with each other, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. The fact that people can move from Ohio to Michigan without needing to get a green card does not mean that Ohio and Michigan do not exist.

Open borders hasn't even erased regional differences between US states. California, Michigan, West Virginia, and New York are all different places.

Levy is so accurate about self-authorship, most people don't want that. We like McDonalds, not because they have the best burgers or even the lowest price. We like that we know exactly what we are getting every single time.

In a way it's like what Daniel Kahneman describes as system 1 and system 2 thinking. System 1 thinking is taxing so we will do almost anything to shift everything into the more automatic system 2. But it's GOOD for us to use System 1 more often. System 2 thinking is fast and easy and prone to mistakes. Encouraging people to get out of their bubbles is good.

WHAT QUESTION IS THIS ARTICLE TRYING TO ANSWER?

1) In a liberal democracy, self-determination is an INDIVIDUAL right.

2) All citizens are due equal protection under the law, regardless of identity.

3) Within that context, customs, ethnicities, mutual interests and associations exist within civil society.

4) Every individual exists at a unique intersection of identities.

5) Live and let live.

GOT A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THAT?
