Christian nationalism as it is being defined currently is a heresy. That a version of it is sweeping the Catholic Church is most concerning.
My fervent prayer is that Pope Leo XIV will soon issue an encyclical clarifying and condemning the error of Christian Nationalism and the false understanding of "integralism" that seeks to undermine the harmonious and independent relations between the church and state.
Even the Eastern Orthodox Churches have condemned the Russian version of integralism that has become inseparable from Putin's regime.
Dreher especially strikes me like a child who retreats to his room to pout after being disappointed that he lost a game. It would be wonderful if he would intellectually grapple with Papal and Conciliar teachings of the last 150 years.
He should also recognize that the monastic flight of the early Church was partially due to the increasing power and corruption of the Church by the Empire. Benedict was not retreating to save European/Western civilization from the dark age falling upon the world until it was safe to take over the world again. Benedict's objective was to create stable and balanced lives for those seeking monastic retreat.
Above all what these "thinkers" reflect is the arrogance of men who think they alone know what "the common good" is and they should be empowered to compel others to live by their understanding.
