Another wonderful essay.

The only reason this "Superman" will fail at the box office will be because the world simply doesn't want or need another Superman movie, another Avengers movie, another Legendary Heroes movie, etc. Unless the market has been saturated plenty of folks will lay their money down for a couple hours of fantasy and fun. The relative degree of wokeness will not come into the consumer decision except for righties with their tight whities in a bunch who probably wouldn't have gone to see it anyway. More important for audiences will be the visual art of the film and the action sequences.

What I love about Superman/Clerk Kent as a character is that all the moral ambiguity lives in Clark Kent and the constant temptation to misuse his superpowers for his own needs, wants and desires. As a child it was Clark Kent with whom I could identify. As a relatively powerless child how often I longed for super powers to "right" all the personal injustices done to me. One of my most persistent and memorable childhood dreams was the ability to fly. Now I just long for invisibility.

Thank you for this wonderful commentary. Yes, I grew up with the version of Superman described in your article. We have lost a lot. How we arrived at our divided society is just now becoming apparent. The question is how do we get back to a coherent and cohesive society?
