For years, the MAGA right has insisted that deporting undocumented workers would free up jobs, lower prices, and restore an imagined Leave It to Beaver-esque past where “real Americans” can thrive. They particularly hammer (no pun intended) the allegedly positive impact of fewer immigrants on the housing market. Vice President JD Vance claimed last week, “Illegal immigrants [are] taking houses that ought, by right, go to American citizens.”

But Trump’s mass deportation scheme actually works against the goal of making housing more affordable—because immigrants are a huge source of labor in the construction industry. Trump’s tariffs are raising the price of material inputs and his deportations labor inputs, jacking up housing prices.

The same is happening on farms that are so short-staffed that Trump’s own Department of Labor warns the nation’s food supply is at risk.

Despite Trump’s proven friendship with notorious sex trafficker and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, and sweet treatment of the Tate brothers, manosphere all-stars charged with sexual abuse and rape in multiple countries, he likes to talk tough on human trafficking. The far right cheers Grokipedia as the dawn of “real truth.” Everyone else sees the outline of an information ecosystem where accuracy is optional and vibes carry the day.

Donald Trump has put in a request to the Department of Justice, where he has installed his buddies in senior positions, to hand over nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in restitution to him. What is the basis of his claim? Apparently, the government violated his rights by investigating his campaign’s collusion with Russia and his whisking away of classified documents to Mar-a-Lago, both crimes for which there was ample evidence.

The DOJ is charged with enforcing the rule of law. Under Trump, it had already been turned into an office of retribution against his enemies and rewarding criminal friends and allies with pardons. But now he is also using it to settle his personal scores and line his pockets by bilking taxpayers. He is turning it into his personal ATM machine.

Trump has issued a directive to museums to eliminate content that is “divisive” and “anti-American.” This has been widely interpreted to mean anything that might offend MAGA sensibilities by being too critical of the U.S. and its past sins. Many are worrying that this edict might cause the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s “Americans and the Holocaust” exhibit, which has been suspiciously shut down for upgrades, to nix or in some way soften its depiction of America’s treatment of Jews during World War II, when many of those who flocked to U.S. shores in an attempt to flee Nazi Germany were turned away.

The Trump administration has not been shy about trying to reshape how Americans remember history—emphasizing nationalist pride over moral reckoning. What was built as a promise to never forget is now subject to forces that hope we never truly remember.

As the shutdown stretches on, Trump’s team has moved to eliminate the few institutions capable of calling out this corruption. The Council of Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (or CIGIE), the independent body overseeing ethics, accountability, and misuse of public funds, was suddenly defunded, folded into the shutdown’s chaos as if it were just another “nonessential” function.

But accountability is arguably the most essential safeguard we have. It is the only barrier between a functioning democracy and the unchecked rule of one man.
